Darleen's Introduction (Blog Post 3)

My name is Darleen and I am part of the team "Àgua". I loved the idea since the day I heard it and it was developed as it is a story close to my heart with personal experiences I have had in the past seen that English is not my first language.

I am originally from Germany but my parents moved to Portugal when I was quite young, this meant that they had to learn the language from scratch and seen that me and my younger sister were learning the language in school, both of us helped our parents learn Portuguese in our spare time.

Languages are a wonderful thing and I feel grateful that I can speak more than one, but learning them isn't always easy as some people will not be patient or understanding when you are struggling to communicate. I speak from personal experience when I say that it feels very condescending when you are laughed at for not knowing the meaning of a word that apparently is "obvious".

I hope a film like "Àgua" will make people more aware of how frustrating it is when there is no compassion or sense of kindness in the environment one tries to learn a language in. How do you expect someone to learn and communicate when they are belittled or left out?

Everyone of us has strengths and something to contribute to this world we live in, but not knowing the language is just a small barrier to let these things show. Although, that doesn't mean they aren't there. Just be as patient as you would want someone to be when you are learning, wether it's an instrument, a language or a sport.

I am going to be working on the cinematography of this film, shot listing, story boarding and bringing to the screen what has been on our minds.

I really look forward to work with this wonderful and talented crew on such a heartfelt topic.
