Kelsey's introduction (Blog Post 4)
My name is Kelsey and I am part of the film team “Agua”.
What resonates with me the most about this idea is that it’s not just another film made for entertainment purposes, but it carries meaning in the way it tackles an important, relevant issue in today’s society that is often overlooked.
Despite my personal efforts to learn a second language, I have only ever been able to speak one language fluently – English. Therefore, I understand how difficult it is for someone to learn an entirely new language that is completely unfamiliar to them.
In terms of the outcome of this film, I hope the audience are able to empathise with the Spanish non-native character who is experiencing a deep feeling of internal struggle due to their difficulties in being able to communicate to someone else (a café worker) in English. The café workers impatience towards this character can often reflect much of the British society who expect everyone to be able to speak their language with ease and a high level of fluency when in this country. Therefore, I hope this film will place native speakers in the shoes of non-native speakers for once.
This is a highly collaborative project, and so though I’ll be getting involved in different areas of the making of this film, as will everyone else, I am mainly going to be involved in the producing/directing side of things.
I am looking forward to working with this incredible crew and excited to see everything come to life!
